Dear Future employers: Sach O disavows all drug references in this post.

Sometimes, I think Hyphy was rap’s last, best hope for escaping the well-worn genre cliches it’s been wallowing in for the last forever. Say what you will about the random slang, goofy clothes and ecstasy: the records were fun and there was a palpable sense that the kids were trying to create a new local culture instead of piggybacking on their older cousins’ gangsta traditions. Plus they had random slang, goofy clothes and ecstasy. That last bit is probably the only thing in common between Scotland and The Bay Area but it’s all Glaswegian production futurist Rustie needs to swipe a particularly silly turn of phrase for his latest banger.

I supposed you could nominally describe this kind of tune as “purple” but that would be doing it a disservice given the unabashed full-color spectrum of the synthesized melodies crammed into every inch of the track. If I were a particularly cruel writer, I’d call it “Skittlestep” and try to start a genre. Updating the wonky Hip-Hop of his previous releases and tweaking the tempo for DJ-friendliness, the track, alongside the similarly euphoric All Nite stands as the best endorsement for drug use this side of Get Em’ To the Greek’s Jeffrey. Electro-funk keyboards smash into Sonic the Hedgehog synths, 808 handclaps battle cartoon alien voices and by the end of the track you’re sure to have a giant smile on your face and a dopey feeling that you’ve lost quite a few braincells to a good cause.
