It’s been three years since Nosaj Thing dropped Drift and opened eyes to the idea that the Low End Theory was more than a Tribe Called Quest album. Flying Lotus may have been the advance messenger, but Nosaj Thing was instrumental in kicking the gates down. As was Mary Anne Hobbs, whose XFM program was recently nominated for a Sony Award for Best Specialist Show, the radio equivalent of the Oscars. But back when she was on the BBC1, her program broke the beat scene before any American journalist. To quote another Low End Theorist, that is the definition of being on-point (Phife).

So when Nosaj returned to Mary Anne’s show it was evident that he’d go full Lincecum (i.e. bring the heat with a marijuana-addled influence.) But he exceeds expectations with one of the best 20-minute mixes I’ve heard in recent memory. Unheard tracks from his new album, a collaboration with Teebs, and a song with Kendrick Lamar. Plus, Jonwayne, Machinedrum, and Lunice. Should anyone also be remotely curious, I’m attaching an MP3 of my segment on Mary Anne’s show last week, discussing Meg Myers’ “Tennessee.” But let’s be real, you will want to listen to this mix immediately.
