Not sure why I just now stumbled onto this fairly comprehensive compilation from the one rapper the Internet hasn’t conspired to crush (give it time). Maybe Jay Electronica really is that great. Or maybe it’s that he’s the only one savvy enough to concoct an air of mystery, aware that no one needs to know the frequency of his bowel movements, whether or not he’s partial to soy milk, and when his baby’s mother is about to deliver. Scratch the last one. For those of you wary of an emcee whose name sounds straight out of an Ibiza chill-out mix, Jay Elect is the one exception, the first rapper to sample Dostoyevsky, the first rapper to call himself “Jay Electyamulkah,” the first rapper to sip Manischewitz on wax. That last statement might not be true–I have yet to hear the new Paul Barman jaunt.
