It’s become increasingly rare to hear a great new song on the radio for the first time. I’m not sure whether that’s because Internet leaks ensure advance warning, or because I spend most of my drive-time listening to the new KDAY (who else is going to play “Gangstas Make the World Go Round?“) So hearing “69 Chevy” on Power 106 on one of Feli Fel’s late-night mixes was a pleasant surprise. A collaboration between Hollywood club crawlers Dr. Hollywood and Kurupt, the track splits the difference between glossy auto-tuned pop and classic West Coast G-Funk. It’s undeniably cheesy but obscenely catchy, and by virtue of left-coast birthright, it is impossible to deny the pleasures of Kurupt waxing philosophical about Age of Aquarius-era Chevrolets. Even if they do brag about wearing chinchilla, which is just a cut above manufacturing animal slurry.
