Wooden Shjips’ decision to remix “Dreaming of Another World,” is either attributable to a late April Fool’s gag, or someone at Rough Trade got slipped some orange sunshine and hallucinated the commercial potential of a pulverizing remix from the current kings of psychedelic drone. Either way, I’ve long suspected that Wooden Shjips occasionally smirk behind their sorcerer beards.  I caught Ripley Johnson rocking out to Dam-Funk during SXSW. He knows how to get down and there is only so much Suicide that you can bump before you start stabbing people. Though their hypno-rock skews more dirge than danceable, Wooden Shjips have always wielded a sinister and subtle groove. Wait till the two minute mark when the squalls of blistering guitar catch a trade wind, transforming what ought to be a sub-Killers cut tailor-made for Urban Outfitters soundtracks, into a weird woolly jam built for maniacs not mall rats.
