Evan Nabavian did not grow up in Canada like the rest of the staff, but he is dedicated to preserving Canuck hegemony.

MoSS grew up in Canada listening to Iron Maiden, Metallica, and ACDC before hockey games, but by the grace of the hip-hop goddess, who in my mind resembles Miss Cleo, he lived next to Roxanne Shante’s cousin, who bought him Whodini’s Open Sesame for his birthday. MoSS has since appeared on Fishscale and Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… Pt. II. Detecting a higher than average midi-chlorian count, DJ Premier signed MoSS to his production company. I learned all of this and more when I interviewed MoSS for Metal Lungies in July.

As a diehard record collector (he reissues rare Persian psychedelia and worked with Egon on an Indonesian psych-rock compilation), the Toronto thirty-something has access to the finest cut of samples. “Smoke Out” grabs some lush instrumentation from the opening of a soul record and rides easy-going drums, as the making-of footage reveals. Fellow Canadian JR Mint recounts his lifelong love affair with marijuana and almost raps well enough to avoid any Mac Miller comparisons. The bro-tastic “Weed Eater” sweater in his press photo certainly isn’t helping.
