We don’t live in the kind of place where summer involves sipping tropical fruit juice in the shade of a palm tree overlooking a quiet beach. We live in a part of the American Midwest where summer means about ten thousand percent humidity, in which you stick to everything and everything sticks to you. Sometimes you have to throw your towel in the dryer post-shower because it will not air dry. It’s gross. The songs on this mix are meant to simulate that sticky feeling (minus the gross factor, plus a little bit of nasty). And, really, the best thing about summer mixes is getting the summer vibes without actual summer because, to be honest, we’re a couple of summer haters.
We live in Chicago because we like the freezing lake winds and six-month winters. We like putting on so many layers that we forget what we’re wearing. So, when summer descends in all its sweaty glory, and we’re forced to strip away those layers, we get whiny. The sun is too bright! Iced coffee is the worst! The bus smells like a giant armpit! But this year we’re trying to embrace summertime, the dank humidity of it, the getting sweaty walking two blocks of it, the bangs plastered to your forehead of it, the sticking to your seat of it – everything that we want to complain about, we’re going to find the charm in it. That feeling we get at the end of the day of having clogged every pore with the filth of the city, we’re going to bask in it. Like our girl Christina Aguilera said back in the day, let’s get dirrty.
