Jawn. It’s a Philly thing. Like liquid cheese on a Pat’s steak or an insistence that the weather is always pleasant. For one’s beats to qualify for the category, crisp drums, tight horns and soul are an absolute must. Repping the City of Brotherly Love, Small Professor’s Beats & Rhymes Jawns, makes his home town proud

Showing off his chops with a wide range of styles, from futuristic funk (“I, Savant”) to old school crate digging (“Bone Marrow”), the diminutive academician is a master of the transition game. Here, a Chappelle’s Show skit sample (naturally featuring hometown hero ?uestlove) quickly evolves into a complicated, percussion heavy groove fest of the funkiest proportions. There, a studio track ends with the beat technician progressing into a live gig set of the same tune. Not once, however, is the progression odd or incorrect. Homeboy definitely has what those in the game call “flow.”

Small Pro also well straddles the line between the schools of old and new. Shirley Bassey samples sit nicely next to Mos Def. Showcasing a wicked sense of humor, our tiny teacher even chops up a vocal clip of Raekwon bemoaning the use of people sampling him.

Represent, Philly. No Jabronis need apply.
