Chris Daly still can’t pronounce this album’s name.

Look, I’m only human. As much as I try to keep strict editorial rules in place when I get ready to review an album, if I find out ahead of time that it’s a concept “soundtrack for an animated novel in which the Dinosaurs make their way through the impact of the comet believed to have destroyed them,” well, you’re already ahead of the game before the needle even hits the wax. Then tell me it follows said dinosaurs as they escape into outer space, only to have their plans thwarted by marauding aliens? Shit, just sign me up as a fan of Mochipet’s CHICXULUB now.

Of course, it’s an instrumental beat album, so all that storytelling is all good and well, but it doesn’t really tell us much about the music, does it? Thank Black Dynamite you people have me. This is boom bap, plain and simple, with ample servings of glitch to keep you regular. Think symphonic, bombastic and gut punching. With the exception of a few well-placed vocal snippets, everything here is scalding synths and heavily executed drum machines. Running the risk of resorting to cliché, though, Mochipet still finds a way to infuse humanity into an otherwise technological exercise. Maybe it’s the obvious link we all feel to outer space dinosaurs. Maybe I just get better drugs than you.

Highlights include the rubbery “Fossils,” which you might want to check out sooner than later, as I have a feeling bass lines like that are bound to be outlawed eventually, and “A Home Away From Home,” which manages to jack up the spasticity level to nearly 11. This is not music for the faint of heart, as such pulmonary deficient folks clearly wouldn’t survive the rave drugs intended to be ingested whilst enjoying music like this.

The Dinoship has landed people. Swing down, sweet chariot, and let me ride.
