Anyone can mix a couple of MP3s and call themselves a DJ this foul era – you find the hyped up genre of the day, jump on, have your lil’ 15 minutes and then you’re out the game. It’s a whole other issue to actually develop a sonic identity of your own and break through genre limitations while still keeping things cohesive and true to your vision. As Montreal’s reigning big room Dubstep champion, Vilify could have easily stuck with the “harder and crazier” route that the mainstream oriented side of the industry went down.
Alternately, she could have just moved on to critic-certified “Bass music” like every other blog-reading Joe blow copping their playlists from Boomkat wholesale. Instead, on her latest mix she goes left – putting together an eclectic selection that builds off the hardcore Dubstep and D&B she’s best known for while expanding her scope to include now school Hip-Hop, darker and groovier ragga-dub, Funky House remixes of the Weeknd and the menacing side of dancehall – all punctuated by speaker rattling drops. Most notably – this mix is full of tunes you HAVEN’T heard – apart from a few Circus Records bangers she’s pulling together tunes that aren’t on other people’s radar making for an hour of music that’s blissfully free of “oh yeah, that tune – cool.” moments. Plus she ends the mix with the Audio Two’s Top Billin’ – that’s an endorsement in itself.
