Evan Nabavian’s favorite Dr. Seuss book is Yertle the Turtle.

Homeboy Sandman stands out on the Stones Throw Roster. He, Guilty Simpson, MED, and Jonti would make a motley BET cypher. More buoyant than blunted, Sandman plays a cheery, quirky everyman whose youthful exploits on “New York Nights” read like those of an NYU undergrad (says the former NYU undergrad). By night, he hollers at Capricorns and steers clear of assholes. By day, he sits through five movies and only pays for one.

It’s all a laugh to him; he rattles off tongue twisters like he’s trying to one-up Dr. Seuss (“Catch a / Cat guzzling caffeine at the cafe”) and he shrugs off poignant spots with corny jokes (“I was glad to be bo(u)rne like I was Matt Da.”) But Sandman’s residency at PB Wolf & Co. starts to make sense when you factor in his beat selection. “New York Nights” employs stargazing jazz fuzz and doesn’t skimp on the drums. Sandman also enjoys the company of left fielders Paul White and R. Thentic, so he’s in good company at Stones Throw fun house. I hear the facilities are superb.
