More Dali and Moving Castle than Ginsberg, Ryat’s video for “Howl” finds her animated analogue bewitched under a full moon and murdering senior citizens with something called skandy. Ostensibly, that is candy for skanks (word to B. Stiller). But there is nothing sordid about the music. It’s hypnotic harp-riddled electronic layered with vocals reminiscent of Beth Gibbons and Andreya Triana. Like cornbread, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. This reminds me of Radiohead’s King of Limbs but with a female vocalist. Makes sense considering the Brainfeeder aesthetic bore a heavy role on that record’s sound.

Her debut Totem is out now on Brainfeeder, whose name is partially responsible for the zombie trends.
