Son Raw bus up di dance

Did somebody say Dancehall revival? In truth, Jamaica’s musical exports never went away but Bashment is a style that thrives on creative destruction: every decade the whole style switches up, old heads complain and then a few years later everybody rediscovers it. Popcaan and Vybz Cartel are as different from Shabba and Beenie Man as those guys were from The Roots era, but they’re making pop music that’s just as innovative.

UK to JA cultural connectors The Heatwave just recently made a pilgrimage to the Caribbean and came back with a 90 minute radio show dedicated to the hottest tunes running the island. There’s air horns, trance synths, toasting, singing and reloads a plenty. Oh and a banging classic One Drop section on the back end for anyone preferring organic vibes. Big spliff business.
