“I just want to be genuine with whatever it is I’m doing.” Greg Grease moves at his own pace. Minneapolis rappers are carving out a new identity, with more dimensions—the old-guard Rhymesayers disciples are sharing stages with irreverent party-starters like Prof and Lizzo; Mike Mictlan is turning your subconscious into a crowded dorm room. But Grease slinks languidly through the summer heat, unbothered. On “Really Tho”, he is the Twin Cities’ Harper Lee, sipping bourbon and peering through the blinds at his neighbors.

“Really Tho” is the first single from the forthcoming Born To Lurk, Forced To Work, due out on Jon Jon Scott’s Sound Verite Records. “We all want to lurk late, live life spontaneous, and have constant fun,” Grease explains. “But we also got to put in work in one way or another—your job, kids, family, affiliation, goals.” The ZULUZULUU- and Medium Zach-produced single reflects that tension; Grease weaves his way through existential angst and “the dollar digits”. His hushed delivery is urgent, incisive—Grease has long toed the line between technical wizardry and the declarative style his subject matter warrants. If “Really Tho” is any indication, Born To Lurk will be a compelling piece of the upper Midwest’s already impressive 2014.
