First things first: for those who haven’t noticed, we’ve added a calendar feature in the tabs above. If you live in Los Angeles and are looking for recommended live music, well, I’m sure you can figure out how use a calendar.

Second things second: we’re doing ticket giveaways for two shows coming up this week at the Echoplex. The first is Spoek Mathambo, a gifted inscrutable South African musician who records for Sub Pop. I’ve written about him at length here. The openers, Gothic Tropic, are worth showing up early for. They’re similarly unclassifiable and one of the best young live groups in LA. The LA Weekly did a write up on them a few weeks ago that valiantly attempts to explain their aesthetic. I have two pairs available for Thursday’s show. E-Mail me at passionweiss@gmail.com and I will pick a winner based on who gives me the most convincing story about why they want the tickets. Fuck this trivia question bullshit. We all know how to use Google.

The other giveaway is for Friday’s nights Douglas Martin Music extravaganza featuring The Coathangers, King Tuff, and Sub Pop’s Jaill. E-mail passionweiss@gmail.com with the name of your favorite tough king and win a free pair of tickets. Yes, King Hippo counts as a tough king.
