Shabazz Palaces – Blast It (from the Village Beat film, Tough Bond) from Sub Pop Records on Vimeo.

Commensurate with their role as the new lost tribe of Shabazz, “Black Up” has been pushed back to late June. Considering that the record leaked a while back, I don’t know what the logic behind this is (production problems? marketing plan? Ish was sent into a state of debilitating melancholy after hearing that Wiz Khalifa record?).

As the wise Gorilla avers, this is one of the best rap albums of the year (file alongside: Quik, Rittz, Fiend, K.R.I.T., DZA, Shady Bambino, and stuff I’m forgetting). But in predictably inscrutable fashion, the video is for a track from one of last year’s EP’s. According to Sub Pop: “This video contains footage from the upcoming documentary by Village Beat titled Tough Bond — a film about kids sniffing glue to survive street life in Kenya’s disappearing villages and exploding urban slums. Original documentary score was provided by Shabazz Palaces.”
