Here’s a dirty little secret about commercially released mixes: often enough, they’re far less interesting than what you can get online for free. While a good radio or Boiler Room set is spontaneous and full of unexpected moments spurred on by crowd and twitter reactions, a mix-CD is better suited to DJs working in specific genres since licensing fees can cripple creativity – YOU try getting Michael Jackson’s estate to sign off on Billie Jean.
This is doubly important when it comes to Oneman, whose propensity to mix underground releases with the latest American mixtape cuts just doesn’t jibe with preplanned tracklists – the oldschool garage on his Fabriclive mix was cool, but it’d have been much cooler mashed up with Katie Got Bandz, Waka Flocka Flame and Juicy J. Solitaire Volume 1. features all of the above, plus London’s most highly tipped producers, alternating between high energy Hip-Hop vibes and pulsing dance music without ever sacrificing either genre’s energy. The mixing is fast and precise, the vibe is loose and you never quite know what’ll drop in next. Not bad for the price of an email.
