It never rains in San Diego. I guess some people think that’s a good thing, but I think it sucks. I love the fresh smell that comes with rain, the warmth of staying inside, and the sound of cars streaking by. I like the grey skies and gloom: Staying indoors and wallowing in a bed of longing, disappointment and headache.
This mixtape is for times like these. It features a crazy-quilt of sounds—a little R&B, a little rap, a little punk, a little electronic music, a little Mexican trip-hop, a little London indie-lounge, and even a singer-songwriter’s cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs.” But though the songs are all radically different stylistically, they all have feeling. They’re just the kind of tunes you’ll need if you’re looking to delve deep inside, ponder the shadows of the universe, wipe a single tear, etc.
I went to college in New York City, but moved back to my home town of San Diego in October of 2009. Right before I left, the humidity of the summer switched off as a bitter cold crept in. In the coming weeks, it got progressively colder and uglier, and that the city was swallowed up in bleak skies and biting winds. But by the time it got really brutal, I was back in sunny San Diego.
These songs remind me of those autumn evenings in New York. As I said goodbye to all my friends and got ready to move back to my hometown, I suddenly realized how cold it was. The wind was bitter, but not unbearably so. It was actually kind of nice. And it made me realize that everything was changing. —Peter Holslin
