For Grime/Bass heads on our side of the Atlantic, this week’s big news is going down in Brooklyn as Keysound Records’ Wen, Beneath, Parris and Dusk & Blackdown touch down for Reconstrvct. I’ll be in attendance, and will likely be very, very drunk.
Until then, a shameless plug and a new mix. When the good people at High on Beats asked me for a podcast summing up new Grime, I was faced with a dilemma – what the hell is new Grime? To me, it isn’t a tempo or even a set of sounds – it’s a vibe that comes from music rooted in an urban, multi-cultural context that reaches for the future by drawing from its past. It’s inherently aggressive but also essentially rooted in the musical traditions of the Black Atlantic so it’s as rhythmically complex as it is intense. With that in mind, I just decided to mix whatever I felt like on March 13th 2014. This is a selection of mostly new, mostly 140BPM, high energy Grime bangers – the kind of stuff I’d like to play out in a packed party. Best enjoyed loud with a glass of your favorite beverage.
