Son Raw’s hood on automatic

Danny Brown’s Old and DJ Rashad’s Double Cup were my two favorite albums of 2013, so when I first heard this track during a Hyperdub radio show over a year and a half ago, there was much rejoicing. Since then, Rashad’s untimely passing threw a black cloud over the Footwork movement, but also seemed to strengthen everyone’s determination to make things work – the scene has grown larger and has spread further than anyone could have expected 10 years ago, and no one’s giving up now.

This final version of “Dubby” comes courtesy of DJ Spinn, Rashad’s production partner and the heir to the Teklife movement, and by the sound of things, he’s got everything under control. Pushing Double Cup’s Footwork/Jungle interactions even further into d&b territory, the track is a masterclass in up to the minute futurism, with the results suiting Danny Brown’s vocals better than a trap banger ever could. All of that, plus a beautiful black and white video from photographer and Teklife visual-conduit par excellence, Ashes57. RIYL shit that will inspire you to create something brand new, while smoking lots of kush.
