Another week passes us by, and another hip-hop classic celebrates a milestone birthday.  The time to consider 20 years of otha fish in the sea was back in 2012.  Today we pay homage to Labcabincalifornia, Pharcyde’s follow-up to their debut which was released way back on November 14, 1995.

Whereas Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde demonstrated the inherent playfulness of the group, Labcab showed the grown-assed side of Fatlip, SlimKid3, Bootie Brown, and Imani.  For many fans this was a turn-off, but in hindsight, it’s hard to deny how strong the album is.  First off, you’ve got two of the group’s best tracks in “Drop” and “Runnin’.”  Let’s also consider that 7 of the 17 tracks were produced by the one and only J. Dilla. This was before he attained his later, well-deserved legendary status.

In honor of almost being old enough to legally purchase a drink, Wax Poetics and WhoSampled employed the brilliant talents of Chris Read to put together 45 minutes of album originals, remixes, source material and assorted goodies.  The need to keep runnin’ away has passed.  Sit back and enjoy.
