Lushlife and Zilla Rocca Give Earl Sweatshirt A Hug

Chris Daly doesn’t like shit but still goes outside.

Sure, each month this summer has successively been the hottest on record since people started tracking these things, but that doesn’t mean the streets don’t turn chilly once the sun sets. Ferris Bueller wasn’t lying when he preached that life moves pretty fast, and the older you get, the colder it often gets, too. Few seem to understand this truth better than Philly’s own Lushlife (Raj Haldar) on what could be the absolute best titled track of the year, “Earl Sweatshirt Give Me a Hug” (a line lifted from one of the hundreds of self-produced cassettes from weirdo rock godhead, R. Stevie Moore). Spitting over a lush soul sample and refined kick drums, Lushlife schools the youth about what it takes to make it, dropping such knowledge as, “Well you could have nostalgia raps and the veneration, I’ll take the tumble and the Tumblr Generation.”

Enlisting the aid of Zilla Rocca, the Shadowboxer laments a game that he worries is passing him by while realizing that it’s so deep in his blood, he can’t escape it. As if a co-sign from ZR wasn’t enough, Lushlife grabs none other than the aforementioned Mr. Moore for the final hook, noting, “most motherfuckers aren’t designed to last.” Fortunately, Lushlife and crew aren’t most motherfuckers.

Lushlife is getting ready to hit the road on a joint tour with Blackalicious. If he’s anywhere near your zip code, make sure to stop by. While I can’t tell you what ticket prices will be at the various venues, I’m fairly confident the hugs will be free.
