Mochilla’s Timeless Series remains one of the most memorable local events of the last few years. For those unlucky enough to have missed the Suite for Ma Dukes and Mulatu Astatke and Arthur Verocai performances, the DVDs are now available. To help promote the release, Brazil-based DJ Nuts has compiled a staggeringly excellent 78-minute mix of the Best of Verocai. As I said last year, think a synthesis of soul, classical, funk, folk, samba, rock and jazz, occupying a psychedelic middle ground between Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew” and Frank Zappa’s “Hot Rats.” Absolutely necessary. And as a bonus, Jneiro Jarel also flips samples from Verocai’s Timeless performance to create the ode to Brazilian girls “Balada 45.” It is significantly better than “Popozao.”
