Footwork is strange stuff. I’ve seen it clear floors but I’ve also seen girls go crazy for it. Often times, it comes down to whether the DJ has a genuine feel for the genre, an all too rare occasion at a time when every other trainspotter is adopting Juke for purposes of fashion. In a genre that constantly teeters between avant-guard madness and raw populist functionalism, it’s all too easy to swerve off the road either way but if done right, the 160BPM tempo is the most exciting thing happening in electronic music right now – word to Hesk and Paveun whose forthcoming mix we’ll be showcasing soon.

In the meanwhile, allow me to point you to a couple of tracks on Planet Mu’s recently released Ghettoteknitianz E.P. Featuring tracks by such Chicago heavyweights as DJs Rashad, Spinn and Earl, it’s a strong release highlighting the colliding triplets and hypnotic samples that the label favors in its Footwork. “R House” is an immediate standout, freaking an oldschool gospel-House sermon and chopping it into a syllable soufflé while “All I do is Smoke Trees” loops Weezy’s croak until the titular marijuana-related boast loses all meaning. In a style evolving at a 100 miles per hour, Planet Mu’s Chicago releases have cannily emphasized the innate alien-quality of weirdness sometimes at the expense of its booty-house directness but there’s no denying that they’ve done more for getting the genre out there than anyone else. DJs, make this an essential part of your Footwork arsenal but not the only part. Everyone else, this is that next shit.
