When you’re a dance producer named RL Grime, the obligation is a Halloween Mix every year until that final headless all Hallow’s Eve. Last year, the LA-based producer dropped razor blade apples full of Triple Six Mafia and TNGHT. This year, it’s everything from Clipse to LA beat world staples Eprom and Salva (in the form of a Problem remix). There’s Sage the Gemini and Rich Homie Quan mixed into classic Dutch techno. That might sound spooky in the pejorative sense of the word, but Grime lives up to his nam — complete with drops from his namesake, RL Stine.
This isn’t exactly a horror-core or fright-inducing mix, but in the same vein as what Salva, Zomby, and the Lucky Me producers have been doing for a while. The trap influence isn’t of an 18 year old first discovering Juicy J solo, but through rap heads who found a northwest passage to connect 808 drums and scaffolding collapsing synths.
