No 128BPM House, plenty of Street Fighter sound effects, no turning down the aggression but no exaggerated heavy metal histrionics either: Dubstep originator Plastician sticks to his guns for the latest edition of his yearly mix throwing up a middle finger to the concept that the ravier end of Dubstep and Grime is going out of style. And it really isn’t: have you seen the amount of Dubstep raves this summer? But while lesser DJs bore through repetitive half-step trudges and the same ol’ bass drops, the South London originator keeps things fresh with the dynamic rhythmic shifts and anything-goes ‘Ardkore madness that defined the genre’s cranked-up-to-11 sense of possibility in its initial rise to promincence. This early 90s informed, rule breaking, British awakening informs both his own production (Retro) but also the tape’s speedy, 16 bit aesthetic as a whole with choice selections from Skream, Benga, Spooky, Emalkay, Caspa, Joker and other producers focused more on the massive than the magazine reviews.
