If you randomly asked whether the world needs more lyrically lyrical raps over hard drums and sampled horns, I would answer, “probably not.” But the reality is that if you rap well enough, ideas are irrelevant. What matters most is energy and the song itself.

So Mally of Minnesnowta delivers anachronistic rhyming with a violence fitting for a beat made by a man who calls himself The Sundance Kid. I don’t know if he’s signed to Rhymesayers or if he’s about to be signed to Rhymesayers, but I do know that Mally is the first under 30 rapper affiliated with Rhymesayers in years who I’ve checked for. Even if “Once We’re Kings” could have used a few Tyreke Evans and Keith Smart references.
